we understand Barrick Gold and Homestake Mining merged in a 2.3-billion-dollar US share swap, making the new entity the world's second largest gold producer - the deal saw Toronto-based Barrick Gold exchange 0.53 of a share for each of Homestake's 263.3 million outstanding shares - the value of the offer boosted each Homestake share to 8.71 dollars US, or a 31 percent premium over its 6.65 dollar closing price on the NYSE immediately prior to the offer
